7-14

It rained again this morning, but at least it was cooler all day. I’d meant to take some time and take pictures, but I was so tired again today that I slept for a couple of hours in the afternoon. I must be becoming a true Marshallese if I am taking a nap every afternoon.

There were three high points of my day. First, as I was walking downtown, I ran into a friend of mine, Belita, who gave me some coconut candy. They make this delicious candy here that it basically coconut and sugar. It takes a long time to make, and it’s rather like a jawbreaker. Last time I was here, I was very excited to take some home to my nieces, but they didn’t like it.

Second, I got to Skype with my parents. Last spring, they finished running a cable underwater from Guam that enabled Majuro to have high speed Internet. From Guam to Majuro is roughly the distance from Salt Lake City to Washington DC, so it was quite an undertaking.

Third, I had a wonderful elicitation session with my friend Lanny. The picture here is from a couple of summers ago, but I really like it. It is such a joy to work with him because he is very generous and very excited to help me with my projects.

On the down side, the mosquitoes have discovered that I am back in Majuro and have started biting me like crazy. There are red dots up and down my legs. Luckily I have been able to sleep, but when I walk or run anywhere, they itch like crazy. Thank heavens for insect repellant.
